During severe storms, wind speeds can reach unsafe levels. This high velocity of wind can cause serious damage to your home. Debris can also be hazardous to your home if it is traveling through the air and collides into the side of the house. The best way to prevent storm damage is to prepare in advance.
Just A Little Off The Top – Harsh winds can pick up debris and send it flying into your house. Try to limit the amount of potential debris that could surround your house by inspecting your property. If there are any low hanging tree branches that could easily be snapped, take the time to cut them down. A big enough branch could gash your siding or even shatter a window.
Nailed It – Making sure that your roof is securely nailed to your house is obscenely important. Often times during installation of a new roof, sheathing is not securely nailed to rafters and beams. This will allow for wind to uplift the plywood sheathing, allowing air and moisture under the roof. This could cause the growth of mold and eventual rot. Before a storm, always make sure that your roof’s sheathing is secure.
Keep It Clear – When wind speeds become dangerous, there is usually a downpour of rain that comes attached to it. Luckily, your home has a gutter system to prevent flooding of your property. Before an impending storm arrives, check your gutters and make sure they are all clear of leaves and other debris. Clogged gutters can cause roof leaks and flooding across your property and home.
Cover Up – Winds that are strong enough can shatter a window. To prevent your windows from being victims of the storm, it may be best to purchase window shutters. These shutters cover and protect your windows and glass doors from high winds and the debris they carry. If a window breaks during a storm, it will be hard to keep wind, rain, and debris out of your home until the storm is over.
