How to Prevent Damaging Frost on Windows

Window frost has always been portrayed in movies and television as something that describes the beauty of winter. Unfortunately, frost that appears on the inside of your home’s windows is something you don’t want to see. Homeowners should take precautionary measures to insure that their windows do not become covered with frost.

Formation & Damage?
Frost will form on your windows when the air outside is below freezing and the air inside is overly moist. A buildup of frost can damage your windows as soon as it begins to melt. After it melts, water can trickle onto the walls and window frame eventually causing water damage and mold growth.

Prevention Tips

  • Check to see if the window properly fits its frame and that there are no gaps or cracks. Seal any gaps with weatherstripping and any cracks with window caulk.
  • If your home has too high of a moisture level then consider running a dehumidifier throughout your home. Frost can’t form if there’s a lack of moisture in the air, no matter how cold it is outside.
  • For windows that consistently produce frost, plug in a space heater close by. This is only a temporary solution until you figure out the winning solution.
  • Older windows will commonly produce frost so it may be in your best interest to replace the window altogether. Opt for a double-paned window because there will be a space between both pieces of glass that will act as a barrier.
