Move in day is one of the more exciting days you’ll have coming up if you recently bought a home or are planning on it. A lot can be going on during this time and you might become forgetful of some very important things on your to-do list. Here are a few things you want to do as soon as you step foot into your brand new home!
Check Your Systems
While you probably did your own visual inspections during the house tour (along with a professional inspection), you still want to give your new home an inspection upon moving in.
- Plumbing – Turn each faucet on and off, test the water temperature of each faucet and shower, run the dishwasher, and perform visual inspections of exposed piping and plumbing fixtures (water heater, boiler, washer, etc.).
- HVAC – Depending on the season, check either the cooling or heating system. Use the thermostat and set the desired temperature to see if the HVAC system begins to cool or warm the house. Having a professional service the unit before regular use is recommended.
- Electrical – Test each light switch, receptacle, and keep an eye out for any electrical sparks, or if any are warm to the touch. You should also inspect the electrical panel and make sure large appliances are connected to dedicated circuits. Always use a certified electrician.
Gutter systems are always overlooked because most people don’t view them as being very important. Unfortunately, for the people who don’t inspect them, they will be left with a roof filled with leaks and a foundation exposed to excessive flooding and damage. A gutter system that fails to properly channel water away from your home will be the reason you have to pay for roof, foundation, and water damage repair bills.
Repair Roof Shingles
Once the gutter system has been addressed, look at the actual state of your roof. Are there any damaged, cracked, curled, or even missing shingles? If so, contact an expert roofer to decide if you simply need some new shingles installed or if a roof replacement is the best option. A home with a damaged roof can cost a lot more down the road, while also causing even more damage to your home.
Unpacking the truck might be the first thing you do, but these actions should follow immediately after — or you’ll regret it.
