The Do’s and Don’ts of Gutter Cleaning

You probably have a weekly chore routine. From laundry and cutting grass to taking out the garbage, these things must be done regularly. If chores pile up, then that means a more laborious task when you get to it. The same goes for gutter cleaning. While you don’t have to clean out gutters weekly, they should be on your home care to-do list at least twice a year.

When it comes time to clean your gutters, here are some things you should and shouldn’t do:

Don’t Let Clogs Happen

One of the most significant problems with gutters is clogging. The build-up of leaves, sticks and other debris can cause water to go onto your roof or onto siding causing water damage. Ensure that you adopt a gutter cleaning maintenance schedule. For example, clean out your gutters every spring and every fall to stay on track.

Do Check the Fascia

The fascia on your house is an edging where your gutter is attached to your roof. The fascia’s role is to protect against water damage. If you notice that your gutters are pulling away from your home, it could be a problem with the fascia. This should be repaired immediately to avoid any further damage to your home.

Don’t Overlook Other Damage

When inspecting your gutters, also check for cracks and holes. Branches and twigs can cause holes in your gutters, and pooling water can bring on cracks and sagging. Caulk any holes or cracks and replace any parts that aren’t repairable.

Do Practice Safety

Anytime you embark on a gutter cleaning project, the safest option is to call a professional. However, if you decide to do the job yourself, heed these safety tips:

  • Ladders – Make sure your ladder is sturdy and don’t climb your ladder alone. Ask a family member or friend to hold the ladder while you climb to keep it steady to avoid slips and falls
  • Wear proper shoes – Never climb a ladder with flimsy shoes such as sandals or flip-flops. Wear rubber soled, closed toe shoes.
  • Wear gloves – Wearing gloves can protect you from cuts and scrapes from sharp sticks and twigs as you clean out your gutters.
