Who doesn’t love saving a few bucks here and there? While it’s often best to hire an expert when it comes to the safety and integrity of home improvement projects, there are a whole bunch of tasks you can take care of on your own. Try completing these exterior home repairs on your own, before opening up your wallet and calling in a pro:
1 – Tightening Loose Gutters
Have a section of gutters that seems to be hanging off the house? The quick and easy fix for that is to install fascia hanger brackets. All you need to do is hook the bracket underneath the front lip of the gutter and then screw the back side of the bracket to the fascia.
2 – Dripping Downspouts
Is the sound of water dripping through your downspouts driving you crazy? You can tie a rope from one of the gutter hangers and run it down through the downspout. This should cause the water to attach to the rope and ride it down rather than having it freefall and make noise and it hits the inside of the spout.
Just keep in mind that the rope will take up space inside the downspout, so if your gutters are prone to overflowing or they clog easily, this may not be the best option for you.
3 – Installing Gutter Guards
Tired of having clogged gutters due to leaves and other debris collecting inside. There are lots of models of gutter guards on the market that are a breeze to install. Many of them either drop right into your existing gutters, or snap on the edges. Many options will also help prevent heavy snow and ice from collecting in your gutters, too!
4 – Filling Nail Holes in Siding
No, you don’t have to replace an entire section of siding just because there a few nail holes are showing. Buy a tube of color-matched caulk and fill and smooth the hole. It’s much cheaper and less labor-intensive than replacing the entire piece.
