A healthy house depends largely on the state of the roof and with temperatures beginning to drop, now is the perfect time to get out there. If you wait until the first snowfall of the season, you’re already well behind and you could be faced with some serious issues when it comes to the integrity of the top of your house. See below for a few tasks you should be taking care of as soon as possible so that your roof is ready for fall.
1 – Remove Up Fallen Debris
Stiff winds and heavy fall rains can leave your roof littered with debris. From sticks, twigs and leaves to errant frisbee or baseball throws, you’ll want to get all of these items off of the roof before they wind up in the gutters.
2 – Clean Out The Gutters
It’s not possible to stay on top of every piece of fallen debris and remove it before it has a chance to fall down into the gutters. With that said, it’s vital to spend some time cleaning them out so that they can do their job properly.
We suggest using an old spatula to scoop out leaves and anything else that may be collecting there. Just make sure to clean it thoroughly if you plan on using it to flip food any time in the near future!
3 – Install Gutter Guards
Now that you’ve cleaned the gutters out, you can keep them cleaner for longer by installing gutter guards. They’re quite simple to put in place and they’ll cover the top of the gutters to prevent leaves and other debris from falling into them.
4 – Look For Damage
Keep an eye out for cracks, gaps, or holes that might be present anywhere on the roof. This includes giving the chimney and the attic a good inspection. After all, things can get worse as freezing temperatures make their way into town.
5 – Add Insulation To The Attic
You can drastically reduce heating bills this winter if you properly insulate your attic now. Just think, the warm air being pumped into the living spaces of your home will have a much more difficult time escaping through the ceiling and out through the attic if that space is insulated. We recommend using mineral wool or spray foam insulation for best results.
