The Best Way To Hang Holiday Lights

How To Hang Christmas Lights

Whether you’re the Clark Griswold of the block or prefer to put up a toned down display, there’s something a little extra heartwarming about Christmas lights. Maybe it’s because they represent a time of the year associated with friends and family members or maybe it makes you think of baked goods and presents, but either way, let’s take this time to be festive! When it comes to holiday lights, there’s a right way and a wrong way to hang them up, so pay close attention to the information below!

Create a Plan of Attack

You may be inclined to just “wing it” this year, but we advise against doing that. If you want to save time overall, it’s best to take a step back, take a good look at your house and come up with a plan in your head. Think about where you want the light strings to begin and end, and make a mental note of where your exterior outlets are located.

Make Sure You Have The Right Equipment

Believe it or not, there are lights designed to be hung outside and lights designed to be used indoors, and they should not be interchanged. The ones you are going to use on the exterior of your home should be labeled for outdoor use and should be tested by a reputable laboratory to ensure they meet safety requirements.

The same goes for electrical cords you’ll be using if you need some extra slack to reach a power source. Never use indoor cords outside and plug lights directly into wall outlets whenever possible.

Use Clips Instead of Staples or Nails

This is one of the most useful, but one of the most underutilized tips when it comes to hanging Christmas lights. Homeowners are quick to reach for staples or nails to affix strings of lights to the house, but that’s a very risky route to take.

Instead of staples or nails which can easily pierce through wires or break bulbs, we suggest using light clips or hooks. In most cases, these options will clip onto your gutters or affix to the eaves of your roof.
